The European Commission's external trade and economic security official, Maros Sefcovic, confirmed that the Commission is ready to negotiate with the US administration to resolve urgent differences.
She said, following a summit of EU leaders in Brussels, last night: "When we are unfairly or arbitrarily targeted, we will respond firmly."
She added that "there are new challenges and growing uncertainty, so the Union is ready for a strong but constructive dialogue with the United States," stressing that the bloc is "ready" to deal with the situation.
She stressed that escalation should be avoided as much as possible by engaging early in the negotiations, warning that "tariffs increase business costs, harm workers and consumers, create unnecessary economic disruption, and lead to higher inflation."
